Why Your "Ventless" Dryer Still Needs Ventilation: A Guide for Carpenters and Building Owners
If you've installed or bought a stacked washer-dryer in a condo, apartment, or laundry closet built in the last few years, chances are it's a ventless model — a condenser or heat pump dryer with no exterior duct running through the wall. That's not a coincidence. In multi-unit construction, cutting an exterior vent through concrete or masonry for every unit is expensive, sometimes structurally impractical, and in some buildings actively works against energy-efficiency targets. Ventless dryers solve that problem elegantly. But "ventless" has led to a widespread and costly misunderstanding: that these units need no airflow consideration at all. They do — just not the kind most people assume.
What "ventless" actually means
A conventional dryer heats air, tumbles your laundry in it, and blows the hot, moist exhaust straight outside through ductwork. A ventless dryer — whether condenser or heat pump technology — keeps that air inside a closed loop. It extracts moisture from the air and drains it away as water, either down a drain line or into a removable tank, and reuses the heat rather than expelling it. That's what makes these units so energy-efficient and why they don't need an outdoor duct.
But the appliance still generates heat, and the heat pump models still need to draw in ambient room air to run their internal refrigeration cycle. Take away the ventilation, and the dryer either runs poorly — long cycle times, high humidity buildup, condensation — or its internal components (particularly the heat pump's evaporator coil) start to struggle with restricted airflow, the same way a refrigerator condenser clogged with dust runs hot and inefficient.
For carpenters and contractors: what to actually build
If you're framing or trimming out a laundry closet for a stacked ventless unit, the rule of thumb that matters is straightforward: a closed closet door needs a door vent providing an air inlet and outlet, full stop. In the US, the International Mechanical Code frames it around a 100-square-inch opening in the enclosure when the space is designed for a dryer, unless makeup air is provided some other approved way. Canadian builders work under the equivalent principle — the National Building Code (and provincial adoptions like the Ontario Building Code, Section 9.32) require laundry-drying equipment spaces to have makeup air where the code calls for it, following the same logic even though the specific article numbers differ from the US code.
In practice, that means one of three things: leave the door off entirely (rarely acceptable to an owner), undercut the door significantly (imprecise, ugly, and doesn't meet the standard cleanly), or put a proper door vent through the door itself. The last option is the one that actually gets specified correctly, because it's the only one that gives you a controlled, measurable opening without compromising the look of the finished space or the sound/lint containment the closet provides. A single door-mounted vent — cut into a door that's already hung and finished — takes a fraction of the labour of swapping in a full louvered replacement door, and it solves the ventilation requirement just as effectively. Here's the part that doesn't show up until something goes wrong. Every major appliance manufacturer's installation manual says, in some form, that the unit must be installed with the clearances and ventilation specified in the instructions. That's standard boilerplate — until a tenant's dryer starts taking three hours to dry a load, or the heat pump component fails early, and the warranty claim gets reviewed. An installation with no air inlet or outlet in a closed closet is exactly the kind of detail that gets a dryer warranty voided, because it's a documented deviation from the manufacturer's own instructions — not a grey area.
